Bluemel’s Brooklands Steering Wheels

The Allard Yahoo group recently had a great discussion about repairing or replacing Bluemel Brooklands steering wheels. Below are some excerpts from the discussion along with links to the suppliers mentioned.

…“I used the Eastwood steering wheel restoration kit for the Bluemel steering wheels on my J2 and K2, with satisfactory results. It is Eastwood #52194Z (eastwood.com). Bear in mind though, that this a patch, not a complete wheel rim replacement, and if the shrinkage of the remaining original Bakelite rim material continues, the cracks will reappear. If one decides to have someone other do the repair, I would assume that the same thing would happen, unless the entire Bakelite rim material is replaced.”

“…there are 2 companies I am aware of who repair the rims etc. they are: Pearlcraft in NSW Australia and Myrtle Productions in Kent, UK.

“….The Bluemells Brooklands steering wheel is now being reproduced from the original tooling by Kimble Engineering, Devon, UK. They cost around £220 ($350) for the rim and spoke set. The blue enamel badge and chrome seperators are also available from them as are the hubs etc. It depends on how good/or bad your wheel is as to whether you repair or renew. It's often easier and cheaper to renew.”

“…The Lucas steering wheel centre incorporating the horn push, indicator and dip switch is another matter. The centre of these burn away due to the high current passing through them from headlamps and are very difficult and fiddly to repair. I have repaired one and needed to fabricate various small sections and glue and screw them together.

There is a reproduction centre without the dip switch and is made to replace the early Triumph TR centre.  When replacing it all, I fitted a relay on the horn and headlight circuits to hopefully prevent future problems. If you do strip the centre down make copious notes of the wiring and "fiddly bits" and take lots of pictures of the assembly - good luck!”

We have been restoring steering wheels since 1975. Our process is to remold the whole wheel, not repair and paint We use a butyrate plastic. We can give you a satin or glossy finish. Whichever you prefer. References also. We even have a Bluemel stamp to finish the job.

My Allard P1 saloon had a totally deteriorated bakelite ring, since it's not possible to rebuilt with the same material,i removed t he bake lite and covered the metal ring with wood, giving a sports look to the steering which is beautiful, can undertake to rebuild any make of your steering wheel Using Ivory colour Satinwood,Teak,Ebony,Mahogony

Greetings from Looking Back Racing (my FB page). As a booster of Vintage Sports Car racing, Allard appears frequently with me. I am chasing a side elevation drawing of the second Palm Beach sports car showing the Dodge Red Ram engine in place. I know i had
it before a computer crash but it has not been recoverable anywhere on the web. Surely someone in your group knows of it and would be good enough to post it for me? I have a rogues gallery now of 2200 such side views and engineering drawings, a few of which can be seen in photo albums I have uploaded. I do generally repair resolution, or enhance with color or detailing to bring them into conformity with the rest of the files. Come and visit if you would llke to see any of this!

Hi all, I'm trying to replace my missing "Lucas" Steering column horn, indicator and dip switch on my allard k1's Bluemel steering wheel. The correct Horn fits snuggly and sit's nicely in the wheel centre across the Diameter of the wheel.
By any chance, does any one know what the part number is or where I can source one please. Rather desperate to finish my restoration. Many thanx in advance all, Andy
