Bob Lytle - The Last Checkered Flag
Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 8:52PM
I just received word that Bob Lytle has taken his Last Checkered Flag. Bob fought a long fight with cancer and now he’s finally at peace.
‘Cottonwood’ Bob (aka ‘Spur Gear’) was a larger than life personality and he served as the Allard Register and was a fixture on the west coast vintage racing circuit in his Black #65 Allard J2X.
Bob requested that no memorial service be held…but please feel free to leave a comment below with your remembrances of Bob. A more fitting obituary will follow…
Bob was a good friend and I will miss him.
All the best,
Colin Warnes

Bob was an inspiration to us all that you can be active later in life doing the same things that make you smile when you were a younger man. We will miss his spirit of life.
Hi, I'm Bob's son-in-law. On behalf of Bob's wife, Elaine, my wife, Debbie, and myself I'd like to thank you all very, very much for this memorial and for the friendship which you gave to Bob and for the support that you are continuing to give to us. Best regards,
This is sad news and all of us who raced with and against Bob will remember him fondly. He always was one I sought out to talk to in the paddock and chat about our race group and Allards in general, and on track he could always be trusted to do the right thing and give you a good race. All of us at Vintage Motorsport magazine send out our sincere condolences to Bob's friends and family.
Bob Lytle's name is synonimous with Allard racing on the West Coast. Although I never met him in person he did send a video message via Steve Schuler after I visited Watkins Glen in 98', telling me how much better it is on the West Coast whlist sat in a deck chair in the sun next to his J2X. The Allard community will never be able to replace him nor shall we ever forget him. Kindest regards Gavin Allard
I'm a little late to the party but, I just discovered this memorial to Bob. I'm 74 years old. Bob bought me my first "legal" beer when I turned 21 --- that's how long I've known Bob. When ever he would introduce me to someone I was the "kid" that he bought his first beer for. He and his mother ( Miss Jesse, my name for her) lived across the hall from my new wife and I in 1957 on Rampart Blvd in LA. He had just taken delivery of his new black "57" Porsche coupe. Much to my new wife's consternation he and I would venture to San Filipe MX on the fourth of July. We would sleep in hammocks at Jose Lemon's camp site south of town. He liked it there because no one would bother us and we could get on with our mischief. But I ramble. I have so many fond memories of years knowing Bob. I'm willing to share should anyone care to inquire
My best to Elaine and Bobs family.
